See, here's the thing they don't tell you when they tell you that War and Peace is this great book that nobody reads: War and Peace is a great book that is entirely readable. What's the first thing(s) you read in the morning? It was translated by Max Hayward and Manya Harari, and lest I sound like I'm spitting in the eye of Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, I loved it. From the Patriotic War against Napoléon to the era of nineteenth- century radicalism and reform, and then on to the October Revolution, the Communist terror, and the postwar period, the Pevear-Volokhonsky project now surveys a cultural expanse as broad as the Siberian frontier. I finished reading War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy (translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky) on February 16th and literally every day since then I have thought about how to write this review. As one who gave up reading War and Peace twice but breezed through it the third time because it was the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation, I am delighted to hear that Turgenev is next in line! He puts this monolingual reader to shame. The Stieg Larsson books, the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation of “War and Peace,” and Laurie Sheck's “A Monster's Notes,” to name just a few (many more from his portfolio are delightfully catalogued on his Web site). €�I came running to Larissa”—Larissa Volokhonsky, Pevear's wife of thirty years and collaborator on twenty-one works of Russian-to-English translation—“and said, 'Can that be? Tin Drum by Günter Grass, translated from the German by Breon Mitchell (here); and James Woods' review of War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, translated from the Russian by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky (here).
